Motorcycle tours across Sri Lanka

Tea estates above 1,800 metres, ancient rock forts, and a coast road you can ride with the sea on one side the whole way. Sri Lanka is the warm counterweight to a Himalayan season.

You can leave the coast in the morning at thirty degrees and be pulling on a jacket in the tea country by lunch. The hill roads between Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are tight, cool and green, and the coastal stretches in the south are as easy as riding gets.

Our route links the cultural triangle around Sigiriya, the central hill country, and the southern coast. It is a good first expedition, and a good one to bring a pillion on.

Riding in Sri Lanka

What licence do I need to ride in Sri Lanka?

A motorcycle licence from home, an International Driving Permit, and a local recognition permit.

The local permit is issued in Colombo by the Automobile Association of Ceylon against your IDP. We handle it on arrival, but bring the physical documents with you.

When is the riding season in Sri Lanka?

Two monsoons hit opposite sides of the island, so something is usually dry.

  • December to March: best for the south and west coasts and the hill country
  • May to September: wet in the southwest, dry in the north and east
  • April and October: the changeover months, mixed weather anywhere
