Ride from the tropical coast into the mountains and back to the Indian Ocean.
This Sri Lanka Motorcycle Tour takes you from Colombo Airport through Negombo, Kalpitiya, Sigiriya, the Knuckles Range, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and the southern coast before finishing inside the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort.
Ride approximately 840 km through a country that changes dramatically every few hours — palm-lined beaches, ancient kingdoms, mountain forests, tea plantations, waterfalls, wildlife country and colonial coastal towns.

Arrive at Colombo International Airport and meet the Offhorizon team.
After the airport formalities, your first ride is deliberately short.
Head towards Negombo, a relaxed coastal town north of Colombo known for its lagoon, fishing culture and colonial history.
Settle into the hotel, meet your fellow riders and prepare for the days ahead.
Explore the Dutch Fort and waterfront before joining the welcome dinner.

The first full riding day takes you north along Sri Lanka's western coast.
Ride through fishing villages, coconut plantations and coastal countryside before reaching the Kalpitiya peninsula.
The landscape here feels quieter and less developed than the areas around Colombo.
Kalpitiya is famous for its lagoons and kite-surfing beaches.
The afternoon is yours to relax by the coast or take part in an optional dolphin-watching experience.

Overnight: Sigiriya
Leave the coast and turn inland towards Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle.
The route passes through rural landscapes and rice-growing areas before reaching Sigiriya.
In the afternoon, climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
The ancient rock citadel rises dramatically above the surrounding jungle and is one of Sri Lanka's most important archaeological sites.
For riders who want more culture, Dambulla Cave Temple can also be visited as an optional experience.

Today the character of the expedition changes.
Leave the dry lowlands behind and climb towards the mountains.
The roads become narrower and more technical as you enter the Knuckles Range.
Expect mountain hairpins, forest, viewpoints and quiet villages.
Although the distance is short, this is one of the most enjoyable riding days because the route allows you to slow down and enjoy the landscape.

Continue deeper into Sri Lanka's central highlands.
The route passes through some of the country's famous tea-growing regions.
Tea plantations cover the hillsides and waterfalls appear beside the road.
Stop at a working tea factory to learn how Sri Lanka's famous Ceylon tea is produced.
By evening, arrive in Nuwara Eliya.
Known as “Little England,” the town's cool climate and colonial architecture make it feel completely different from the tropical coast.

Leave Nuwara Eliya and follow winding mountain roads towards Ella.
The route passes through tea plantations, valleys and dramatic viewpoints.
After arriving in Ella, walk to the famous Nine Arches Bridge and, for those who want to stretch their legs, climb towards Little Adam's Peak.
Watch the landscape change colour as the sun sets over the mountains.

Today you leave the mountains.
The road descends towards Sri Lanka's southern plains, where the climate becomes warmer and the landscape changes from tea plantations to dry-zone countryside.
Hambantota places you close to some of Sri Lanka's famous wildlife regions.
An optional wildlife experience can be arranged for riders who want to explore the surrounding safari country.
The region is home to elephants, leopards and a wide variety of birdlife.

The final full riding day follows Sri Lanka's southern coastline.

Enter through the old fortifications and explore the UNESCO-listed colonial town.
Walk along the ramparts, visit the lighthouse and enjoy the final sunset over the Indian Ocean.
Then join the group for the farewell dinner.

Coastal Roads, Tea Country & Mountain Bends

Ride from palm-lined coastal roads into Sri Lanka’s central highlands, with paved roads, light gravel and winding climbs through tea plantations. The Knuckles Range brings narrower roads and mountain hairpins before the route descends to the southern plains and coast. Expect an easy-to-moderate journey with time to enjoy the changing scenery.

You ride a Royal Enfield Classic 350cc motorcycle provided by Offhorizon.

Is Sri Lanka suitable for beginner adventure riders?

The expedition is rated Easy–Moderate, but riders should have previous motorcycle experience and be comfortable riding in unfamiliar traffic and mountain roads.

When is the best time to ride?

The Southern Tropical Expedition operates in the December–March winter period.

What are the main highlights?

The route includes Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Kalpitiya, Knuckles Range, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, the southern safari region and Galle Fort.

Is Galle Fort included?
