What to expect

Across all four Himalayan ranges

The route crosses all four Himalayan ranges: the Shivalik, the Central Himalaya, the Greater Himalaya and the Trans-Himalaya. You start among forest and green valleys around Manali and finish in the dry high desert of Ladakh. Under the wheels it is a mix of tarmac, hairpins, gravel, broken road and a few river crossings. Expect the surface to change several times a day.

Before you book

Questions before you book

Who is this Himalayan motorcycle tour for?

Riders with real experience on a motorcycle who are comfortable on gravel, broken tarmac and steep climbs, in changing weather, for several hours a day. You do not need to be an off-road expert. You do need to be patient, reasonably fit and ready for long days at high altitude.

How difficult is the 11-day Himalayan motorcycle tour?

We grade it Challenging. No single road makes it hard. It is the mix: eight riding days in a row, altitude up to about 5,800 m, surfaces that go from tarmac to gravel to water, and long stretches with no town nearby. If that sounds like too much for a first trip to the Himalayas, our 8-day Ladakh tour is the easier one.

Is this tour suitable for beginners?

No. This one needs previous experience on gravel and rough roads. If you are newer to riding, look at our 8-day Ladakh motorcycle tour, which is graded moderate and beginner friendly, or write to us and we will suggest the right trip.

How much does the Himalayan motorcycle tour cost?

The rider price is ₹170,000, which is about US$1,760 at the current rate. A pillion pays ₹120,000. That covers the coach from Delhi to Manali, the motorcycle, fuel, all meals, hotels and camps, your own room, permits, the road captain, the mechanic, the support vehicle and a photographer. Flights, riding gear, travel insurance and personal spending are extra. Prices are set in rupees, so the figure in your own currency moves a little with the exchange rate.

What is the best time for a Himalayan motorcycle tour to Ladakh?

June to September. That is when Shinku La, Khardung La and Umling La are open and the high camps are running. Our departures are spread across those four months. The calendar shows every date and how many places are left.

How high does the tour go, and what about altitude sickness?

The highest point is Umling La at about 5,800 m. Khardung La is about 5,359 m and Shinku La about 5,090 m. You only cross these. The highest places you sleep are Pangong and Hanle, at about 4,300 m. The route gains height in steps over the first week, which helps your body adjust, and the crew carries first aid and oxygen. Drink a lot of water, skip alcohol on the high nights and talk to your doctor before the trip about altitude medication. If you feel unwell, tell the road captain early.

How far do we ride each day?

Between 100 and 200 km on most days, which means five to seven hours on the road with the lunch stop. The total is about 1,480 km over eight riding days. Distance tells you little here. A hundred kilometres of broken road in Zanskar can take as long as three hundred on a highway. The longest days are Padum to Lamayuru, Nubra to Pangong and the Umling La day.

How many riders are in the group?

Ten at most. On narrow mountain roads a bigger group spends its day waiting for itself. With ten, the road captain can keep the whole group together.

Which motorcycle will I ride?

A Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, one for each rider. It has a 452 cc liquid-cooled engine, six gears and a 21-inch front wheel. The bike and its fuel are in the rider price.

Can I bring a pillion?

Yes. A pillion shares your motorcycle and pays the pillion price, which is lower than the rider price. A pillion must be over 16. Add the pillion when you book. Keep in mind that the rough days in Zanskar are harder work with two people on the bike.

Why does every rider get a single room?

Because sharing a room is where a Himalayan trip most often goes wrong. Snoring keeps people awake, and at altitude sleep is already hard to come by. The riding days start early, so two people sharing one shower and one washroom means somebody is always waiting or rushing. Adjusting to a stranger's routine for eleven days is tiring in a way that has nothing to do with the road. So we took room sharing out altogether. Every rider has their own room, in the price, so you sleep well and start each day on your own time.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes. Riders must be at least 24 and hold a full motorcycle licence. A pillion must be over 16.

Do you provide a helmet and riding gear?

Bring your own helmet, jacket, gloves, riding trousers and boots. You will be wearing them five to seven hours a day, and gear you already know is more comfortable than anything borrowed. If you cannot bring it, we have gear for rent. Ask us when you book.

Can I join on my own?

Yes. You get your own room without paying extra, so you are not matched with a stranger. During the day you ride with the group.

Are meals included?

Yes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 11. Drinks and snacks you buy for yourself are not.

Is fuel included?

Yes. All fuel for your motorcycle from Manali to Leh is in the rider price. Petrol pumps are far apart in Zanskar and around Hanle, so the crew plans the refuelling stops.

Is there a support vehicle and a mechanic?

Yes, both, on every departure. The support vehicle carries the luggage, first aid and oxygen. The mechanic travels with the group and handles punctures and repairs on the road, so a small problem with a bike does not end anybody's day.

Is there a photographer on the tour?

Yes. A dedicated photographer and videographer travel with the group on every departure and shoot the ride, so you do not have to stop and set up your own camera to get a picture of yourself on a pass.

Where do we stay?

In hotels in the towns, and in camps at remote stops such as Pangong and Hanle. The camps have large tents with attached bathrooms and proper beds. Every rider has their own room or tent.

How do I get to the start, and how do I get home?

Fly into Delhi. From there you travel to Manali on day 1 by Volvo coach, which is included in the price. If you would rather take a private taxi or a flight, we can help you arrange it at extra cost. The tour ends in Leh after breakfast on day 11. Leh has an airport with direct flights to Delhi. Flights are not part of the price.

Do I need an international driving permit?

If your licence was issued outside India, yes. Bring your home motorcycle licence, an International Driving Permit and your passport. Riders from India need a valid Indian motorcycle licence.

Can foreign riders go to Hanle and Umling La?

Yes. Riders from outside India ride to Hanle and over Umling La with us, and both are on every Ladakh tour we run. We arrange the permits from your passport details.

Who arranges the permits for Ladakh?

We do, and they are part of the price. Send a copy of your passport when you book and carry the original on the ride.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, please buy it. It is not included. Check that the policy covers riding a motorcycle of this engine size, travel above 5,000 m and emergency evacuation. Many standard policies leave out one of the three.

What is Full Damage Protection?

It is an optional cover for the motorcycle, and its price is shown when you book. Without it, we take a US$300 deposit on the bike, and you pay for damage from a crash or a fall as set out in the expedition terms. With it, no deposit is taken. You choose it when you book.

What happens if a road or a pass is closed?

It happens. Snow, landslides and local restrictions can close a pass with a few hours' notice. When a section is not safe, the road captain changes the route or the timing and the group goes another way. Safety comes before sticking to the printed itinerary.

How cold does it get?

It depends on where you are. Delhi and the lower valleys can reach 35°C in summer. Nights at Pangong and Hanle, at about 4,300 m, can fall to around -2°C, and the high passes are cold and windy at any hour. Pack layers you can add and take off during the day.

Is there phone signal on the route?

In Manali and Leh, yes. In Zanskar, at Pangong and at Hanle, expect little or nothing for a day or two at a time. Only Indian postpaid SIM cards work in Ladakh, so a prepaid or foreign SIM will usually go quiet after Manali. Tell people at home before you leave.

Is Umling La the highest motorable road in the world?

Umling La is at 5,798 m, or 19,024 ft, which is higher than both Everest base camps. It was certified as the world's highest motorable road in 2021, and it is still one of the highest roads you can ride a motorcycle over.

What is the difference between this tour and the 8-day Ladakh motorcycle tour?

This one is the long road in. You ride from Manali through Lahaul and Zanskar before you reach Leh, which adds three days and the roughest riding of the trip. The 8-day Ladakh tour starts with a flight to Leh and stays in Ladakh, with Tso Moriri and Tso Kar added. Both go to Khardung La, Pangong, Hanle and Umling La. Pick this one for Zanskar and for arriving in Ladakh by road. Pick the 8-day tour if you have less time or less experience on rough ground.

Can you run this route as a private or custom trip?

Yes. If you have your own group, need different dates or want extra days, tell us through the custom expeditions page. We have added days and changed the route for groups before.

How do I book, and when do I pay?

Choose a date, say who is coming, and pay either the full amount or a deposit. The checkout shows the exact deposit before you pay. Everything must be paid 14 days before departure, because permits, rooms and vehicles are committed against that date. The How booking works page explains the rest.

Had a fantastic 15-day Ladakh tour which was extended down to Dharmashala, the extra days were a great addition. Going into this with no prior experience of Off Horizon or my fellow adventurers I can only say that it exceeded all my expectations. Bikes were great, lodging and food was as good as could be expected in the locations we visited, and the team was tirelessly friendly and helpful, with a genuine passion for sharing their country and culture.

I have just completed the 11 day Ladakh tour with Offhorizon Adventures. Right from the initial contact the team there were extremely helpful and nothing was to much trouble for them to help with, from flight advise from Ireland, transportation, extra accommodation and even possible medical issues like altitude sickness that might arise. If I thought they were good at this stage ? I was blown away by their level of professionalism and hospitality during my trip. Everyone on the Off Horizon Team made this a trip of a lifetime for me. The bikes were well maintained and in excellent condition, any little tweaks, personal preferences or changes to their set were undertaken to suit all riders. Once on the road and starting our adventure, you always felt safe, their advise and attention to detail made the trip truly unforgettable. My exsperience of off road was “0” but with their help, I got through it and enjoyed every minute. We travelled through some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable with every day bringing something new. The accomadation throughout was just perfect with a mix of first class hotels to small family units in the more isolated locations- considering the Irish pallet and diet the food was great and again the team explained every offering. I’m not going to single out any particular Off Horizon team member because each one of them gave 100% of their professionalism, time, hospitality and kindness to every one on this trip- they limit their numbers, which is great because you get that extra attention and help- I could write pages on what I saw and did during the trip but this is something you are going to have to exsperience yourself. Huge thank you to all the other guys on the trip too and a pleasure to meet you all- I would have no hesitation in recommending Off Horizon if you are planning this trip- thank you so much for a truly fantastic adventure 🇮🇪🇮🇳

Great experience! Caring and skilled team, quality bikes, engaging itinerary, good selection of accommodations, endless supply of food and drinks, cultural experiences and a dedicated video/photographer to capture all that. Highly recommended. PS: Surya created an extended 15 day Ladakh and Himachal tour (the original was 11 days) in response to our request. It turned out be much more enjoyable.

Huge thanks to the entire Offhorizon Adventures team for the amazing organization of our tour! We rode an incredible route from Manali through the Zanskar Valley and Kargil all the way to Leh—it was the adventure of a lifetime. I’d like to specifically highlight the team's professional approach: * Bikes and support: The motorcycles were in excellent mechanical condition, fully prepped for high-altitude riding and off-road terrain. You feel safe throughout the entire journey. * Route and logistics: Everything was well-planned, from the initial briefing to stops, accommodation, and meals. The guides know the area perfectly, maintain a comfortable riding pace, and allow time to soak in the fantastic Himalayan views. * Atmosphere: The team is incredibly warm, responsive, and open. They are ready to help, offer advice, and handle any logistical issue at a moment's notice. If you are planning a high-altitude motorcycle tour in Ladakh or Zanskar, I definitely recommend Offhorizon Adventures.
