Ride Into Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang is one of Nepal's most distinctive motorcycle destinations.
The journey begins in Kathmandu and gradually moves towards the mountains. After reaching Pokhara, the route follows the Kali Gandaki River through deep valleys and dramatic mountain scenery before entering Mustang.
As you climb north, the landscape changes.
Green hills give way to barren cliffs.
Forests disappear.
The mountains become wider and more exposed.

Leave Kathmandu and ride towards Pokhara.
The road follows rivers and mountain valleys as the landscape gradually changes from the Kathmandu Valley to the foothills of the Himalayas.
Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna region and provides a completely different atmosphere from Kathmandu.
Enjoy views towards the Annapurna range before preparing for the Mustang section ahead.

Today the expedition heads towards Mustang.
Follow the Kali Gandaki River through dramatic gorges and mountain landscapes.
The road becomes increasingly mountainous as you move north.
Kalopani is a peaceful village surrounded by Himalayan scenery and marks the beginning of the more remote section of the expedition.

For riders choosing the side trip, take the approximately 32 km round-trip detour to Yara and continue towards the ancient Luri Monastery.
The route crosses rugged inner Mustang terrain and provides a chance to experience one of the region's more remote cultural sites.
After exploring the area, return to the main route and continue to Tsarang.

Is this an easy motorcycle tour?

No. This is an adventure motorcycle expedition into Upper Mustang. The route includes mountain roads and rugged sections, particularly as you enter the high desert region. You should be comfortable riding a motorcycle for several hours and handling changing road surfaces.

What makes Upper Mustang different from a normal Nepal motorcycle tour?

Upper Mustang takes you into a restricted trans-Himalayan region with a landscape and culture very different from the greener valleys of central Nepal. The expedition reaches Lo Manthang and explores the former Kingdom of Mustang rather than stopping around Pokhara or Lower Mustang.

Can I ride my own motorcycle?

This specific expedition is supplied with a new Royal Enfield Himalayan 452cc according to your tour document. If you want a bring-your-own-bike option, that should be offered as a separate product rather than mixing the two offers on this page.

Is Upper Mustang restricted?

Yes. Upper Mustang is a restricted region and access involves special permits and regulated travel arrangements.
