The route starts with the old imperial capital at Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu Monastery. It turns north to the crater lake of Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, known as White Lake, and on to Lake Khuvsgul, where there are two …

About 60 percent of the route is unpaved. Expect dust and corrugated tracks, most of all in the west. You do not need to have driven off-road before, but you should be a confident driver. Day 9 is seven to eight hours at the wheel, and Days 5, 8 and 10 are six to seven. Fuel stations are scarce beyond Murun and Ulaangom, so the convoy carries spare fuel. Uureg Lake is at 1,450 m and the passes near Altai Sum reach above 2,500 m.
A Toyota Land Cruiser 200, a full-size 4x4 built for long distances on bad roads. No more than three people share a vehicle, and fuel for every driving day is included. One of our own guides leads the convoy, and mechanics and a support team travel with it. The Land Cruisers are insured, but tyres, the windscreen, the underbody, and damage from careless off-road driving or river crossings are not covered.
In Altai Sum a family of Kazakh eagle hunters hosts the group for a day and a night. You watch a golden eagle being worked, meet the hunters and their horses, hear Kazakh folk music and share a home-cooked meal. At Lake Khuvsgul there is a full day off the road, with a ride on horseback along the shore and, if they can be reached, a visit to a family of the Tsaatan, the reindeer people. That visit depends on where the family is camped and cannot be guaranteed. There is also Erdene Zuu Monastery, the walk up the Khorgo volcano and the Kazakh market in Ulgii.
Two nights at the Novotel in Ulaanbaatar, hotels in Kharkhorin, Murun and Ulgii, lodges at Lake Khuvsgul and Tosontengel, ger camps in between, and one night in the eagle hunters' guest ger. Breakfast and dinner are included every day. Lunches are not, apart from the lunch with the eagle hunter family. There is mobile data in the main towns and none in the remote stretches, and cards are unreliable outside Ulaanbaatar and Ulgii.

If they can be reached. The Tsaatan move their camps, so the visit near Lake Khuvsgul depends on where the family is at the time.
