Motorcycle and 4x4 expeditions across India

From the high passes of Ladakh to the cold desert of Spiti, India holds the widest range of adventure riding in the region. We run the northern half of it properly.

One country, two entirely different rides.

India offers everything from 5,000 metre passes in the north to coastal and cultural routes in the south. They demand different machines, different seasons and different planning.

Our expeditions currently focus on the Indian Himalayas in the north, which is where our workshop, our crew and a decade of terrain knowledge sit. South India is planned, and we will open it when we can run it to the same standard.

Why us

Why ride India with Offhorizon

  • 01

    On the ground since 2014

We started as BRB Expeditions, renting machines to riders heading into these same valleys.

  • 02

    Based in Manali

The gateway to the Himalayas, and the start of most of our routes. We are not managing this from another city.

  • 03

    A local crew

Guides who read this terrain and this weather because they live in it, not because they studied the map.

  • 04

    Planned, not improvised

Structured itineraries with acclimatisation built in and enough slack to absorb a bad day.

  • 05

    Full support

Expedition leader, mechanic on motorcycle groups, backup vehicle and coordinated logistics.

  • If the road is closed, we will tell you before you book, not after.

Before you go

Riding in India

Do I need travel insurance and permits?

Yes. Both are required, and neither is optional.

Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover:

  • High-altitude travel above 5,000 metres
  • Motorcycle riding, which many standard policies exclude
  • Emergency evacuation, including by helicopter

The Himalayas are remote. Proper cover is what stands between an incident and a very expensive problem.

Permits are required for several regions, including Ladakh. We arrange all of them, but we need your passport and visa details well in advance to do it.

When is the riding season in the Indian Himalayas?

Broadly June to September, and the edges of that window move every year with the snow.

  • June: passes open, rivers running high from the melt
  • July and August: the most reliable riding, though the monsoon affects the approach through Himachal
  • September: clear skies and the best light, with cold nights

Outside that window most high passes are closed. We will tell you if your dates do not work rather than sell you a trip that will not run.

What licence do I need to ride in India?

You need a valid motorcycle licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit, obtained before you travel. An IDP is not issued in India.

Bring the physical documents. A photograph on your phone will not satisfy a checkpoint.
